Take me to the point of my creation,

 In his final interview, published in the United Kingdom's The Telegraph, Tavener said "I’ve been thinking about the Presbyterian minister who had guided me as a youth. I remember he was a man who struggled with doubt, and that impressed me. He used to quote an old Zen Buddhist line to me: 'Life is a creeping tragedy. That is why you must be cheerful'.”

"For a lot of folks who get sober, the process of getting and staying sober becomes their higher power, and it becomes a religion that sort of consumes a whole lot of them. I just don't think that that's necessary. I think that that can be a side note rather than the story of your life. I think a lot of people are scared, and I know I was scared to get sober, at least using this as an excuse; 'I don't want to be one of those sober people.' And I don't think you have to be. I think you can be one of those people who happens to be sober. For me, no, I'm not a particularly religious person. I was determined not to convert during that process."

Matti who had been an alcoholic became sober with the help of the Alcoholics Anonymous twelve-step programme, gradually however he became somewhat fanatical about his sobriety. One day while speaking with his wife she said in half-seriousness “You know I respect the effort he has made to pull himself up but sometimes I feel I liked him better when he was a drunk’. Through the memory of a shared experience we could smile about the situation and yet be glad that he was not being destroyed through addiction.    

Call for Prayer

Journeying back from Mecca Guru Nanak (1469 –1539) stopped near the outskirts of Bhagdad where, one early morning he began to sing praises of the Lord. His first follower Bhai Mardana Ji playing the rebab accompanied him. Their offering was so beautiful that it was not long before a crowd gathered to listen.

More strictly orthodox Muslim among them found the music and singing blasphemous. They went and complained to the Mawlānās who said that the two travelers should be stoned to death. A crowd returned with stones in their hands and so taken with violent intention were they that they forgot it was neigh on time for prayer as prescribed by their faith.

They were on the verge of throwing stones when they saw Guru Nanak stand, raise his eyes heavenward, place his hands to his ears and give out a call for prayer exactly as a muezzin would from the mosque. Touched to their innermost heart by the resonance of the divine call they cast aside their stones and in remorse went to their Pir and told him of the presence of a holy man.

The Pir went and enquired who the man was. He was told that he was Nanak who had no religion, belonged to no sect, and was called to sing in praise of the Lord wherever he went.
